About this collection

The Environmental Oral Histories of Southeastern North Carolina Collection features oral histories of individuals residing in Robeson and surrounding counties, with a special focus on individuals’ experiences of the environments in which they have lived and worked. Many interviewees describe living closely with the earth, on farms, and maintaining strong allegiances to the communities in which they continue to live.  Many interviewees also discuss the changes to rural spaces they have observed across time because of ecological and industrial development and shifting employment opportunities.

This collection is a multimedia print and digital archive that preserves local knowledges of ecology, sustainable agriculture, and history. With the support of the Office of Academic Affairs and the Livermore Library, this collection is being preserved and disseminated in print and online.

These interviews were conducted by students in several terms of UNCP’s Environmental Literature course (AIS/ENG 2410) that were taught by Jane Haladay, Ph.D., American Indian Studies Department, and Scott Hicks, Ph.D., English, Theatre and Foreign Languages Department. For this assignment, the students considered the following questions with interviewees:

  • What have been the understandings of environmental belonging that have characterized and influenced the generations who have inhabited this place?
  • How have the people who have lived in this region crafted a way of life that sustains the rich ecologies of their places?
  • What lessons can we take from the people of our community and the watershed we share, lessons that will fortify us for a future of scarcity and disruption?

By recording and preserving the experiences and expertise of local residents, the objective of this collection is to empower students, researchers, and community leaders with knowledge they can use to steward our region’s human and natural resources.
