Description
Mrs . Vevely Malloy was born in a rural area of Scotland County in 1945 and grew up in what was mostly a farming community . Her family raised cotton , tobacco , corn , and soybeans . She has witnessed a lot of changes in the way that farming is conducted in the area . The types of equipment used in farming , in particular , have changed drastically . Farmers have moved from hoeing crops in their fields by hand to using large machines to do the work . This is true for harvesting tobacco and cotton . The changes meant that fewer people were needed to run the farms , so there were fewer jobs available on the farms . In Scotland County , it was fortunate that several large plants , like the J . P . Stevens Textile Plant and Abbott Laboratories , opened in the area . These plants provided jobs for Scotland County residents with much better pay than working on the farm . Mrs . Malloy feels that the change from working on the family farm to working in factories also changed the way that families operated . There was less family time . The adults worked more and longer hours , and the children were reared by many different caretakers , rather than just mom and dad . The family structure has also changed ; there are more single-parent homes . Unfortunately , in the mid-1990s , the manufacturing plants began to close down and many people in the area lost their jobs . Consequently , there was widespread unemployment , and people were forced to change their vocations and lifestyles . Many returned to school for more training and\or education in order to get different jobs . Mrs . Malloy thinks the climate in the area has changed over the years . There are more really cold days and really hot days than in the past . There is also a lot more snow than in the past . Both Mrs . Malloy and her husband are UNCP graduates . They started a preschool in Laurinburg , North Carolina in 1979 , and the preschool is still in operation .
